What is Palliative Care?

Palliative Care is care meant to improve the quality of life for patients with a life-threatening or serious disease such as cancer. It addresses the whole person and not just the disease. Since it is important to address the causes and side-effects of any disease as soon as possible, this includes any psychological, spiritual, or social problems. Palliative care can be provided in a hospital, outpatient clinic, long-term care facility, or at home by a licensed healthcare provider. Palliative care is available to anyone, regardless of age or stage.

To make a patient feel better, many of the same treatments used to treat cancer can be used for palliative treatment. Radiation therapy or chemotherapy may slow down the growth of tumors causing pain. Surgery may also be used to remove a tumor that presses on nerves or causes pain.

Palliative care specialists often work in a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and registered dieticians. They also might be chaplains or psychologists. To manage the care of a person and ensure the highest quality of their life, the palliative care team collaborates with the oncology team.

Palliative care specialists can also help caregivers, encourage communication between health care professionals, and facilitate discussions that focus on patient care goals.
